A Special Thanksgiving Visit

By Hannah Goldberg

On our recent trip to Haiti, over Thanksgiving, we were fortunate enough to welcome a new child into our Global Family home. I was one of 13 volunteers who witnessed the desperation in Derac, Haiti. Derac is a small village geographically, but it is home to many Haitians. While it is obvious this village lacks basic human necessities, families continue to stay, having little other choice.

The most heartbreaking part of being in Derac is witnessing the desperate babies. My mother, Lori, has always wanted to help all of the children in Derac; and with this trip, she finally got an opportunity to help the most vulnerable. While our volunteers walked through the village, many mothers would come up to us and offer us their babies. These mothers knew that we would be able to provide their child with a loving home and all the necessities of life. Be clear: these mothers loved their babies so much that they were willing to give them up to give them their best chance. All our hearts broke for these women, and my mother asked a local friend, Alince, if there was one family especially in need of help for their baby. He showed us to Judeline's family.

Judeline was a baby living with her father and grandmother as her mother had passed away. It was heartbreaking. The father could not provide for his child while taking care of his own mother, an elderly woman. It was a very special moment for the organization and especially my mother to have the opportunity to help this family. Bringing a baby, like Judeline, into our Global Family home was life saving and life affirming. Her father later brought Judeline to the house to make sure he was bringing her to a safe environment. They came dressed in their nicest clothes. It was apparent that the father was proud that his daughter could be properly cared for and that he could help ensure that would be the case. Judeline immediately adjusted to the home, and was glued to the side of our oldest boys, Richardson and Evanson. This experience was both heartwarming and amazing; many of the volunteers were in tears.

Sunnyslope Youth Center Celebrates the Holidays GFP Style

On December 12, Sunnyslope Youth Center celebrated the holidays with Global Family Philanthropy with a day to remember. GFP donated brand new shoes and other gifts to the many children served by the youth center. The volunteers, children, and their families were treated to a delicious meal catered by Bourbon Jack's Bar and Grill. A variety of holiday activities were offered including a special visit from Santa Clause! In addition, Global Family was proud to offer a donation to the youth center from the pop-up shop fundraising event held earlier in the year. We are excited for the commitment between GFP and Sunnyslope Youth Center and look forward to future events.
